Even more Vilnius roundabouts will have their signage updated – at the beginning of August, clearer traffic organization will be introduced at the roundabouts of Savanorių, Laisvės prospekts, Geležinio Vilkos and Tūkstantmečio streets, where drivers will be greeted by special information boards, directional road signs and a newly marked roadway.
"After updating the markings of the first roundabouts, we observed the results of the changes - the accident rate at these intersections decreased almost 2 times. Changes at the roundabout of Savanorių, Laisvės prospekts, Geležinio Vilkos and Tūkstantmečio streets will be made taking into account the study conducted by the Road Research Institute of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University, during which transport flows were analyzed. After updating the markings at the roundabout, traffic will become more orderly and smoother, and drivers will spend less time maneuvering at the roundabout and its surroundings," says Vytautas Mitalas, Deputy Mayor of Vilnius.

From August 2, when approaching the roundabout of Savanorių, Laisvės prospekts, Geležinio Vilkos and Tūkstantmečio streets, drivers will see stands informing in advance about upcoming traffic changes. The pavement markings themselves are planned to start changing from August 2, and all work will be completed by August 11. From this day, drivers will be greeted with advance information about the traffic order on the roundabout so that they can choose and occupy the required lane in advance. Drivers will see this information on information boards installed before the intersection, and directional road signs will also be installed and the carriageway will be marked. In order to reduce the speed of vehicles on the roundabout itself, speed bumps will be installed before the entrances to the roundabout from Laisvės prospekts and from Tūkstantmečio streets.
"At the renovated intersections, lane management is regulated so that drivers can choose the required lane in advance before entering the roundabout and do not have to change lanes at the intersection itself. These traffic organization changes are being implemented so that car flows move faster, congestion and emergency situations decrease, and disruptions to public transport are reduced. At those roundabouts where changes have already been made, a clear decrease in accidents is noticeable, and we are gradually observing an improvement in traffic flow throughput," says Tomas Kamaitis, Head of the Traffic Organization Department of Vilnius City Municipality.

Last year, one of the central streets of the capital was newly marked Constitution Avenue, Geležinio Vilko and T. Narbuto streets roundabouts, and three years ago such markings appeared at three more roundabouts: Antakalnio, Olandų and T. Kosciuškos streets; Žirmūnai, Šeimyniškės, Tuskulėnų streets and Santariškės and Žaliųjų Ežerų streets.
After updating the markings at the roundabout of Savanorių, Laisvės prospekts, Geležinio Vilkos and Tūkstantmečio streets, traffic management and organization experts will monitor the situation for some time and present the results.
