In Vilnius, the renewal of roundabout markings continues - at the beginning of August, clearer traffic organization will be introduced at Konstitucijos Ave., Geležinio Vilkos and T. Narbutos St. at the roundabout, where drivers will be greeted by special information panels, road signs and a newly marked roadway. It is estimated that the number of traffic accidents in other rings of the capital has decreased by as much as 6 times after this updated marking was applied earlier.
In 2016, Vilnius roundabouts, which were identified as the most dangerous in the city and had the lowest traffic capacity at that time, were newly marked - these are Antakalnios, Olandų and T. Kosciuškos streets. and Žirmūnai, Šeimyniškių and Tuskulėnai streets. roundabouts.
"After renewing the markings of the first roundabouts, we observed the results of the changes - accidents at these intersections decreased significantly. Clearer traffic organization helps drivers to move more smoothly in hot spots, not to be distracted, thus increasing the safety of all road users. Taking this into account, we are also undertaking work at other roundabouts in the capital. Konstitucijos pr., Geležinios Vilkos and T. Narbutos st. about 4,4 thousand people cross the roundabout during the morning rush hour, and about 5,4 thousand during the evening rush hour. cars, which will soon notice the changes in traffic organization," says Modesta Gusarovienė, director of Transportation Services.
From July 18th, when approaching Konstitucijos Ave., Geležinios Vilkas and T. Narbutos Sts. drivers at the roundabout saw billboards informing them in advance of pending traffic changes. It is planned to start changing the surface marking itself from August 2, and to finish all the works by August 6. From today, drivers will be greeted with advance information about the traffic order in the ring, so that they can choose and occupy the right lane in advance. Drivers will see this information on the information boards installed in front of the intersection, as well as road signs and a marked carriageway. For example, driving along Geležinii Wilkos Street (from Ukmergė st. side) and by choosing the first lane, you will be able to get to T. Narbutos, Geležinios Vilkas streets and Konstitucijos ave., and by choosing the second lane - to Konstitucijos ave. or go back to Ukmergė and Geležinii Vilkas streets.
"In those roundabouts where the marking changes are implemented, the traffic lanes are regulated in such a way that drivers choose the required lane in advance before entering the roundabout and do not have to change lanes at the intersection itself. These traffic organization changes are being implemented so that car flows move faster, ring roads become safer for pedestrians, traffic jams and emergency situations and disruptions to public transport are reduced. At those roundabouts where the changes have already been made, a clear reduction in accidents is noticeable, and we are also gradually observing an improvement in the throughput of traffic flows," says Vilnius city municipalities Tomas Kamaitis, head of the traffic management department.
After renewing the markings on Konstitucijos pr., Geležinios Vilkos and T. Narbutos st. at the roundabout, traffic management and organization experts will monitor the situation and results. If this principle of traffic organization lives up to expectations, changes are planned for Savanorių, Laisvės pr., Tūkstantmečio and Geležinio Vilkos streets this year. at the roundabout.
