From Monday (August 26), the repair of Bridge Street begins. In the first stage, until the end of the year, the section from Vilniaus st. to Tilt st. 21. Until this part of the street is repaired, in the section from Vilniaus st. to Radvilų st. car traffic will be restricted, except for residents and special transport. Pedestrian traffic will not be restricted.
Currently, both the roadway and sidewalks are in poor condition. The existing sidewalks on Bridge Street are very narrow in places, it is difficult to pass them, it is difficult for residents with disabilities or parents with wheelchairs to move.
During the implementation of the project, worn-out asphalt and concrete paving will be replaced with granite, and sidewalks will be widened to meet the needs of the city's residents. In order to return Bridge Street to its historical character, stone pavement inserts will be installed in places. The street lighting supports will also be renewed during the renovation.
The rest of the street from Tilt st. 21 to Šventaragi street and Ž. Liauksmin Street repair works are planned for 2025. After the repair, no changes in traffic organization are expected on these streets - they will continue to be one-way traffic.
The repair project was prepared by UAB "ID Vilnius", the contract work is performed by UAB "Beam".
The current Bridge Street is mentioned in historical sources since the 1828th century. This street served as a road to Vilnius castles. Around the XNUMXth century the Radvil Palace was built near Tilt Street. It is said that in the XNUMXth century in the middle of the XNUMXth century, the king of Poland and the Grand Duke of Lithuania Žygimantas Augustas used to travel along this street from the Palace of the Lords to the Radvilai Palace to see Barbora Radvilaitė. The two grand palaces were separated by a canal, and the bridge by a bridge, which gave the name to the street. The Radvil Palace did not survive - it was abandoned in the XNUMXth century, and in XNUMX were sold and demolished.
