Recently, Vilnius residents have been complaining about vehicle congestion, the city's mayor Valdas Benkunskas says that the situation has been stable for almost a decade. According to him, solving the problem should start with the Road Traffic Rules (KET) corrections.
"I really like to explain the reasons if we have a problem. In fact, we've had a stable situation with car congestion for probably a good decade now - there are flare-ups, there are decreases. At the moment, there is also a festive period," he said on the "Delfi interview" program on Thursday V. Benkunskas.
"Analyzing what has happened in recent weeks, it is clear that when traffic accidents occur and people do not agree on who is to blame, all the arteries are blocked. This leads to the occurrence of new traffic accidents. (…) Most of the time, these are some small bumps, when it is possible to free up the traffic lanes and not block all the traffic. Therefore, first of all, road traffic rules must be adjusted," he emphasized.
According to Vilnius city municipalities mayor, if there is no damage to people's health during the traffic accident, drivers should be obliged to pull over their cars immediately.
"This is one detail. Of course, there are many reasons. They are also related to infrastructure changes, bandwidth increase, unified system of traffic light regulation throughout Vilnius. These are the works of the city that we are doing", emphasized the mayor of the capital.
According to V. Benkunskas, investments are made in public transport renewal and quality, it is planned to allocate funds for the development of "A" lanes, increasing bandwidth.
ELTA reminds that 11 accidents occurred in Vilnius county on Monday last week. At that time, there was a big traffic jam in the capital.
