Although recently "LTG Link" announced plans to resume the train route between Vilnius and Daugavpils from this spring, but this will not happen in the near future. This is evidenced not only by the lack of information in the public space, but also by the company itself.
The company recently conducted a pilot train service on this route, which showed that the train journey from Vilnius to Daugavpils takes about 2,5 hours. Following this pilot, the company began assessing the possibility of resuming regular train services between Lithuania and Daugavpils.
Although plans were made that this could happen as early as this spring, when repair work on the Latvian railway section would be completed, they were not destined to come true.
“The Vilnius-Daugavpils train route has not yet been confirmed. To better understand the need for this route, we are communicating with business representatives, the Latvian train operator “Pasažieru vilciens” (Vivi) and other interested parties. We hope that decisions will be made in the coming months,” says Tadas Markevičius, AB “Lithuanian railways"Communication partner."
By the way, this would not be a new route. Previously, international trains between Vilnius and Daugavpils already operated, but they were canceled during the pandemic, as traveling between different countries was extremely complicated.
As the company previously announced, LTG Link is evaluating the possibility of such a route together with the Visaginas municipality. Such a connection would ensure convenient communication for the residents of Visaginas and Daugavpils and allow for more frequent and convenient visits for work or leisure purposes.
