The route of the Kyiv-Riga passenger train via Minsk and Vilnius to Tallinn can be extended no earlier than summer, the Estonian state railway operator Eesti Raudtee reported.
"During negotiations with representatives of the Ukrainian state railway company Ukrzaliznycia, which initiated this route, its determination to extend the route to Tallinn was confirmed. Now we will try to find out how relevant it is for us. If the findings are favorable, this train to Tallinn will start running already at the beginning of summer," said Monika Lilles, head of public relations at Eesti Raudtee.
According to her, the need for such a route will be clarified with the municipalities of the southern regions of the country, as well as the opinion of the states through which the train runs on the expected schedule changes will be known.
"We continue to be interested in such an opportunity, we are ready to clarify the prospects of its implementation to the end. It's just that sometimes it takes longer than we would like," said Artur Raichman, director of development at Eesti Raudtee.
In his opinion, when this train starts running to Tallinn, more passengers would be received and because it would open up a new opportunity for traveling to Scandinavian countries.
The Kyiv-Minsk-Vilnius-Riga passenger train started running at the end of September last year. From January 30, its flights were condensed from once a week to once every four days.
Ukrzaliznycia previously announced that its profitability is almost zero so far, stressing that the project is a success, considering the fact that the route opened recently and now is a "low season".
