Active train users have already noticed the new ticket prices – the price of a trip may be different when traveling on the same routes. The passenger transport company of the LTG group "LTG Link" has been applying dynamic ticket pricing on six routes since mid-May.
Dynamic pricing was first tested on the route between Vilnius and Kaunas, and since last month it has also been applied on the routes Kaunas–Šiauliai–Kaunas, Kaunas–Marijampolė–Kaunas, Vilnius–Trakai–Vilnius, Vilnius–Varėna–Marcinkonys–Varėna–Vilnius and Vilnius–Riga–Vilnius.
"When choosing these routes, train ticket prices change dynamically depending on the day and time of travel, train occupancy, and the time remaining until the train departs. As with buying flight tickets, the same "golden rule" applies - those who plan their trip in advance save the most," says Kristina Meidė, head of LTG Link.
Tips for those who want to buy a train ticket cheaper
There are many ways to buy train tickets, but LTG Link offers some simple tips for those who want to save money.
Buy tickets in advance.
Tickets are usually cheaper if purchased in advance. Tickets for all domestic train routes are sold 30 days in advance, and for international routes Vilnius-Riga and Vilnius-Krakow - 60 days in advance.
For example, if a 2nd class ticket on the Vilnius–Kaunas route normally costs 8 EUR, if purchased a month before the trip, the ticket will cost 4,80 EUR. And the cheapest advance tickets on the Vilnius–Riga route are offered for 9,6 EUR (standard price – 24,0 EUR).
In addition, as the departure time approaches or when buying a ticket on the train, the price of the trip can be up to 10 percent higher. For example, if a ticket usually costs 8 euros, on the day of the train departure it may cost 8,80 euros. Therefore, it is worth taking care of your travel tickets in advance.
Avoid the 2 EUR fee by buying tickets online
It is most convenient to buy train tickets in advance online at ltglink.lt or in the LTG Link mobile app, at ticket machines installed at train stations or at Perlo terminals (paying in cash).
It is worth knowing that when purchasing a train ticket on the train, an additional fee of EUR 2 is applied. The fee does not apply to old-age pension recipients, schoolchildren, children and persons specified in Article 6, Part 1 and Article 7, Part 1 of the Law on Public Passenger Transport Benefits of the Republic of Lithuania.
Also, there is no additional fee for passengers purchasing tickets on the Vilnius–Airport–Vilnius route, passengers wishing to continue their journey from Vilnius on the same day by presenting a Vilnius–Airport–Vilnius train ticket, and passengers transporting children in strollers when departing from Kaišiadorys railway station. of the station.
Check if you are eligible for a discount
To encourage people to choose train travel, various discounts and benefits are applied to children, families, schoolchildren and students, seniors and people with individual needs. Travelers are also invited to join the "Trainers' Club", whose members regularly receive attractive offers and collect points for train travel, which they can later exchange for discounts on new train trips.
The full list of who is eligible for discounts and benefits is provided in the "Discounts and Benefits" section of the ltglink.lt website.
Please note that discounts and benefits are usually valid on routes where dynamic pricing is applied.
