For the second year in a row, Via Lietuva (formerly the Directorate of Motor Vehicles of Lithuania) is paying particular attention to the improvement of road conditions and road surface repair projects on the country's main highway Vilnius-Kaunas-Klaipeda. During this year, it is planned to repair almost 23 km of sections of the busiest highway in this country. The work is planned to be completed this fall.
Repair and road renewal works are planned to be carried out this year on seven sections of the Vilnius–Kaunas–Klaipėda highway, the total length of which is almost 23 km. It is planned that work will begin on six sections of the highway in late March-early April, and on one more at the beginning of summer.
"This year, maintenance work on the country's main arteries - highways - will continue. On the main Lithuanian highway A1 Vilnius-Klaipėda, more than 14 km were repaired last year, and about 23 km of pavement is planned to be repaired this year. In addition, the A. Miškinis bridge over Neris will be completed this year on the A1 highway Beautiful construction and the reconstruction of the bridge over the Krunas has started," says Deputy Minister of Communications Julius Skačkauskas.
According to Marias Švaikauskas, head of "Via Lietuva", society expects comfortable and safe travel. Via Lietuva's goal is to meet these expectations, which the company has been consistently doing for several years in a row. The works start in early spring, they are planned so that they do not move into the next year, but are completed by winter.
"Every year, with the onset of spring, road repair work begins. Unfortunately, roads wear and need to be maintained, and the time to do so is limited. Road works return to the Vilnius–Kaunas–Klaipėda highway every year. This is one of the busiest roads, so road works are inevitable here. Last year, five sections of this highway were repaired, the total length of which was more than 14 km. About 23 km more are planned to be repaired this year," said Marius Švaikauskas, general director of Via Lietuva, about the continuity of work on one of the most intensive highways in the country.
When driving from Vilnius towards the seaside, sections from Grabučiškių to Neveronii (83,427-87,14 km and 87,66-89 km). Work on this stretch should begin at the end of March.
In the stretch from Antakalnis to Rumšiškii (70,935-80,51 km) (work is planned to start in early June).
When driving from the seaside towards Vilnius, simple repair works will take place in the section from Paparčių to Sausinė (107,254-108,66 km and 108,71-111,614 km (kilometers indicated from Vilnius).
Another managed section will start immediately after passing Žiežmarius towards Elektrėnai (57,231-58,3 km and 58,6-61,511 km (kilometers indicated from Vilnius).
In the above-mentioned sections of the highway, the asphalt surface is worn, it has cracks and defects, such as cracks, networks of cracks, ruts, etc. During the repair, all the mentioned defects will be fixed on the road, by completely replacing the asphalt surface and thereby extending the road's useful life, ensuring safe and comfortable driving conditions with sustainable solutions.
During the minor repair works, traffic will be diverted to the other side of the freeway and will operate in 4 lanes in most sections. In order to ensure greater traffic safety, oncoming traffic flows will be physically separated by engineering measures. In the sections where the works will take place, the maximum permitted speed will be limited to 70 km/h.
Ordinary repair work will also take place on the main road Riga-Šiauliai-Tauragė-Kaliningrad. About 5 km long section of this trunk road (27,026-32,001 km) will be repaired.
At the beginning of March, work began on the Vilnius-Utena main road, which is in the worst condition - the almost 30 km section of the road from Molėtai to Utena is under maintenance. in 2023 October month. the works on the section of this main road in the city of Utena have been started. The work here is planned to be completed in the third quarter of this year.
Intensive works are underway on the main road "Via Baltica". in 2023 the 12,5 km long section of the main road "Via Baltica" was reconstructed and work began on the most technically complex and longest section, almost 16 km long. This year, it is planned to start reconstructing the last section of this main road up to the border between the states of Lithuania and Poland. The completion of the reconstruction works of the approximately 40 km "Via Baltica" road is scheduled for 2025.
In total, during the past year, "Via Lietuva" renovated almost 30 km of main roads in the country. For the last time, such pace of work was at its highest intensity Lithuanian roads were recorded a decade ago.
