While Lithuania is still experiencing the rhythm of spring chill, extreme weather phenomena are being recorded around the world – the Middle East is already approaching May temperature records. According to the analyses of the weather forecasters at Fanipogody.pl, the weather contrasts between Europe and South Asia are becoming increasingly pronounced, and spring is particularly late this year in our region.
Frost and unusually low temperatures in Lithuania
On the night of May 14-15, Lithuania, like neighboring Poland, will be hit by another burst of cold air. Local frosts are forecast, especially in the eastern and northern parts of the country. Such temperature fluctuations are not common at this time of year - on Wednesday, many places will be only 10-12 degrees Celsius, and on Thursday, in some places, only 8-11 degrees Celsius. Only in the western part of the country can we expect slightly warmer temperatures of 13-14 °C.
According to Fanipogody.pl, these may be the last frosts of this spring, but they appeared unusually late. Temperature contrasts will remain in Lithuania on Friday and the weekend - warmer in the west, still cool in the east.
The Middle East is in a heatwave
Meanwhile, temperatures in the Middle East, particularly in Iran, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates and Pakistan, are already reaching 44-45°C. According to the GFS model, temperatures in the Arabian Peninsula are expected to reach 22°C or higher on May 46. This is dangerously close to the all-time May record of 51,1°C, set in Egypt in 1973.
If the aforementioned prediction comes true, we could see a new temperature record being set - which would indicate how much the climate is warming in the southern latitudes.
The end of May - will it bring summer warmth to Lithuania?
Although there will be no summer heat in Lithuania or the surrounding countries in the coming days, the analysis by Fanipogody.pl shows that the synoptic situation will change already in the last week of May. Due to the weakening of high pressure formations in the center of the continent, tropical air masses will begin to penetrate our latitudes from the southwest.
According to the GFS model forecast for May 27, in Lithuania, as well as in Poland, the first heat wave is likely - thermometers could reach 26-28 °C in some places. This would be the first sign that summer is finally approaching.
While Lithuania is still living with frosts and double-digit temperatures, the world is observing increasingly aggressive heat. The end of May could become a turning point – both in our country and throughout Europe. However, according to Fanipogody.pl, this year's spring is distinguished by its unpredictability: snow in some places, and almost desert heat in others. Everything indicates that summer this year will not come suddenly, but with serious climatic challenges.
