According to the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service under the Ministry of Environment (LHMT), the hydrological drought is already declared as a dangerous phenomenon on a national scale.
This is according to the calculations made yesterday, comparing the actual and the lowest average multi-year water level. Out of 48 water measuring stations in the country, 28 stations were found to have water levels below or equal to the lowest multi-year average warm period water level. A hydrological drought on a national scale is declared when more than half of the water measuring stations observe a hydrological drought of a local nature.
Due to the dry and hot weather, the Šešuvis river at Skirgailai, the Sanžilė canal at Bernatonii, the Nemunas at Panemune and the Neris at Jonava have been the most affected so far. In these water measuring stations, the water level is 20-30 cm below the lowest average multi-year value.
According to LHMT forecasts, the weather will be cooler with short rains in the near future. Longer and more abundant rain is expected on Friday and Saturday, but for now rivers and lakes will not be greatly affected, water levels will change slightly.
