Straw gardens are one of the most beautiful traditional folk art decorations. It is not only the heritage of Lithuanian folk art, but also a very important part of the cultural heritage of the Baltic Sea region, Europe and the world, reflecting the old worldview and traditions. A garden is a legacy of our ancestors that has a sacred meaning, which had and still has great importance in Lithuanian folk customs. The Lithuanian straw garden is like a scaled-down "model of the world". It was tied for weddings, baptisms, during calendar holidays. The garden was hung in the most honorable place, above the table. The hanging garden on the deck was associated with the heavenly garden - paradise or heaven.
Project "Gardens of Šventaragis" implements the idea of a traditional garden. Ten enlarged gardens will decorate the Šventaragis valley, the square and the space near the King Mindaugas monument. The gardens will delight the citizens and guests of the city throughout the dark period of the year: from 2017 December 1 until 2018 Spring Equinox - March 20
Illuminated gardens in Vilnius will also hang during events commemorating the centenary of the state of Lithuania: each garden is dedicated to a separate decade of our state. Illuminated "Sventaragi Gardens" are like a link between the old cultural tradition and its naturally changed meaning in the present. The project aims to ensure that the tradition of thatched gardens remains a part of the ethnic self-consciousness of modern Lithuanians.
For the first time, the gardens will be lit up before the Christmas tree is lit On the Cathedral Square, December 1 18.00:XNUMX p.m. The celebration will be accompanied by the music of bagpipes and tablas (Vytautas Linkevičius, Jonas Tumasonis, Vilius Marma).
